The San Francisco skyline is a vibrant tapestry of architectural history. Yet, when the signature Pacific fog rolls through the avenues of the Richmond District, the sharp profiles of the modern city fade away, leaving the gleaming contours of Eastern Orthodox domes and tilted, three-barred crosses to pierce the gray mist.
For nearly eight decades, the Church of Our Lady of Kazan on California Street and the corner of 19th Ave has preserved this sacred visual witness. Founded in 1949, it is one of the oldest Russian Orthodox churches on the West Coast of the United States. Rich in émigré culture, it has long served as a sanctuary where families preserved their faith, language, and traditions. Notably, this beautiful gem uniquely memorializes the Royal Holy Martyrs of Russia.
Recently, our beloved temple faced a severe structural crisis. Decades of harsh coastal weather and relentless fog took a devastating toll on the original rooftop crosses, causing them to fracture and collapse. This damage severely compromised the surrounding support structures, leading to active roof leaks and structural water damage that threatened our sacred interior.
Recognizing the immediate threat to the church, the parish took swift, faithful action. To stop the water damage and secure the temple, the parishioners have already funded and successfully placed the brand-new blue domes and holy crosses atop the building. And they are stunning!
In Orthodox tradition, a church building is an icon in architectural form. The unique “onion” shape of the dome mimics the flickering contour of a burning candle flame, symbolizing the prayers of the faithful rising to God. The brilliant blue color of the domes carries a profound dedication to the Mother of God (the Theotokos), signifying heavenly purity and the divine realm. It serves as a visual reminder of the sky and the heavens, prompting believers to look upward toward the divine.

Crowning these domes are traditional three-barred crosses, which tell the complete story of the Crucifixion, and is a signature symbol of Orthodox faith, characterised by the bottom slanted bar. It represents the Scale of Justice. It points upward to Heaven for the repentant thief on Christ’s right, and downward toward spiritual ruin for the thief who mocked Him.
However, covering these immediate, emergency construction costs has placed a heavy burden on our parish funds. With the blessing of our ruling Archbishop, His Eminence Archbishop Kyrill, we are now actively fundraising to recuperate the estimated $175,000 spent on this critical project and to finish repairing the underlying roof infrastructure.
We place our trust in God, and in your immense kindness to help our community recover from this immense financial undertaking.
“Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.” — 2 Corinthians 9:7
